How to Measure Kids Shoe Size?

If you’re like most parents, the prospect of buying kids shoes can be intimidating. There are many different sizes, styles, and brands out there and it can be hard to know which ones are best suited to your child’s foot and style needs. ???????

But more importantly, you want to make sure they’re wearing the right size shoes so they can grow up healthy and strong. Luckily, buying kids shoes doesn’t have to be stressful or difficult, especially if you follow this step-by-step guide on how to measure kids shoe size!

Step 1: Lay the measuring tape on a flat surface

Place your child’s foot at a right angle on top of it, and ensure that both heel and toe are lined up with tape edges. Make sure you measure bare feet.

Or, if you have no measuring tape, find an object of known length—for example, use an extension cord or rug—and estimate two-thirds of its length with your eye.

Step 2: Locate your child’s heel against the measuring tape

Place your child’s heel against an edge of a piece of paper and mark their longest toe with pen or pencil. Then, measure from heel to toe. The distance is your child’s foot length. Use a ruler to find out how many inches that is.

Step 3: Have your child take off his or her shoes (no socks)

Using a flexible ruler or measuring tape, measure your child’s foot in inches from heel to the longest toe. This measurement is typically listed as foot length or foot size.

It may also be labelled foot length, shoe size, or even just size. If you don't have either of these two tools, use something like string or dental floss and then measure that length on a ruler.

Step 4: Use your finger to find where your child’s longest toe touches

Position your thumb behind their heel and your index finger in front of their toes for measuring perfect kids shoes. If you can’t fit all four fingers between their longest toe and the end of their shoe, they don’t have enough room in that shoe size.

(If you can only fit one or two fingers there, it’s even worse.) We want to avoid putting shoes on our kids where these joints are compressed because it can lead to all sorts of foot problems, including ankle sprains.

Step 5: Make sure you keep measuring up until you get over their last toe bone

If you are getting ready to shop kids shoes, you must make sure that your child is wearing shoes that fit properly. In order to ensure proper fit, you will need to measure your child’s foot on a regular basis.

The first step in measuring your child’s foot for buying perfect kids shoes is by placing a piece of paper against a wall and then stepping on it with their bare foot as if they were standing on it at home.

Step 6: Take another measurement using your fingers at mid-foot

Place your foot on a piece of paper and step forward with your other foot so that it is touching your heel. Then place two fingers of one hand in between your heel and your other toes.

You should have about 1/4 - 1/2 of space between your foot and your finger. The number you see when you measure should be half or less than half of what you measured from behind.
