Types of Flat Roofing Commonly Installed

Selecting the right kind of roofing material for your house is of prime importance. Not only does it enhance the look of your home, but it also helps make it more maintainable and sturdier. Knowing what kind of roofing material and the types are available in the market will also help you communicate better with the  flat roofers  and contractor.

However, if you are new to this industry and do not know where to start, this blog is sure to help. Here you will find some of the most common types of flat roofing material available and which one suits your needs the best.

  • Build Up or Bur Roofs:

More commonly referred to as gravel or tar roof, these have been in use for over a century. For these roofs, layers of roofing felt three feet wide are striped in and then covered with hot tar. The asphalt tar is heated to its liquid state and then applied to the roof.

Generally, after 2-3 layers, the roofing felt is added in place with the tar, and the top layer is covered with pea gravel; these small stones further help protect the tar from the harmful effects of the sun.

  • Spray Polyurethane Foam Roofs:???????

Perhaps the most used roof type usually begins with a layer of high-density polyurethane foam that gets sprayed. The foam is then coated with a kind of elastomeric coat that makes it waterproof. The top-most layer of this kind of roof is generally a reflected white or gray in color. However, since the top layer is sprayed, you can usually distinguish the spray pattern.

  • EPDM Rubber Roofs:

Another common type of flat roof you can avail of from a flat roofing Toronto service is rubber roofs. These are relatively easier to point out and install. Rubber roofs are usually installed in two ways, either by being weighed down with a large river stone or being glued to the roof.

The rubber roofs that are installed with adhesive are easier to spot since they are black in colors and tightly stretched over a fiberboard. On the other hand, the roofs that are ballasted are always held down with large stones on the roofing sheets. These are covered in stones similar to those of built-up roofs and are easier to remove.

  • Thermoplastic PVC Roofs:

In this kind of roofing, single layers of roofing membrane are used, which are usually gray or white in color. However, you can also find other colors and select one as per your preference. The membranes are fixed using an adhesive. This process is similar to the former mentioned type.

Another simpler way is to attach the layers mechanically with plates and screws. However, these kinds of roofs are usually harder to distinguish from a distance because of their predominant shade of white.

These are a few flat roofs you will come across for your project. You can consult a professional flat roof repair service to learn which one is the most sturdy and easier to install.
