The Connection and Difference Between Chips, Semiconductors, and Integrated Circuits

What is a chip?

Chip, also known as microcircuit, microchip, integrated circuit (integrated circuit, IC), refers to the silicon wafer containing integrated circuits, small size, often part of a computer or other electronic devices.

Chip is the collective name of semiconductor component products, is the integrated circuit (IC, integrated circuit) carrier, from the wafer division.

Silicon wafer is a very small piece of silicon, containing integrated circuits, which is part of a computer or other electronic equipment.

What is a semiconductor?

Semiconductor refers to the conductivity at room temperature between the conductor (conductor) and insulator (insulator) material. Such as diodes is the use of semiconductor devices. Semiconductor is a material whose conductivity can be controlled and can range from insulator to conductor.

The importance of semiconductors is enormous, both from the point of view of technology and economic development. Most of today's electronic products, such as computers, cell phones or digital recorders in the core unit have a very close relationship with the semiconductor. Common semiconductor materials include silicon, germanium, gallium arsenide, etc., and silicon is the most influential one among all kinds of semiconductor materials in commercial applications.

Matter exists in a variety of forms, solid, liquid, gas, plasma, etc. We usually refer to materials with poor electrical conductivity, such as coal, artificial crystals, amber, ceramics, etc., as insulators. And the metals with better conductivity such as gold, silver, copper, iron, tin, aluminum, etc. are called conductors. Can be simply between the conductor and insulator materials called semiconductors.

What is an integrated circuit?

An integrated circuit (integrated circuit) is a miniature electronic devices or components. Using a certain process, the transistors, resistors, capacitors and inductors required in a circuit and wiring interconnected together, made in a small or several small semiconductor wafers or dielectric substrates, and then encapsulated in a shell, becoming a micro structure with the required circuit function; all components in the structure has been composed of a whole, so that electronic components towards miniaturization, low power consumption, intelligence and It is a big step towards miniaturization, low power consumption, intelligence and high reliability. It is represented by the letters "IC" in the circuit. For example,  ATM7023A is a popular IC.

Integrated circuits were invented by Jack Kilby (integrated circuits based on germanium (Ge)) and Robert Noyes (integrated circuits based on silicon (Si)). The majority of applications in the semiconductor industry today are silicon-based integrated circuits.

The integrated circuit is a new type of semiconductor device developed in the late 1950s a 1960s. It is after oxidation, lithography, diffusion, epitaxy, evaporation of aluminum and other semiconductor manufacturing processes, the composition of a certain function of the circuit required for the semiconductor, resistance, capacitance and other components and the connection between them all integrated in a small piece of silicon wafer, and then welded package in a tube shell of electronic devices. The package shell has a variety of forms such as round shell, flat or double inline.

Integrated circuit technology includes chip manufacturing technology and design technology, mainly in processing equipment, processing technology, packaging and testing, mass production and design innovation capabilities.

What is the difference between chips and integrated circuits?

The focus to be expressed is different.

Chip is generally referring to your naked eye can see a lot of small feet or feet can not be seen, but a very obvious square piece of that thing. However, the chip also includes a variety of chips, such as the baseband, voltage conversion, etc...

The processor emphasizes function, referring to the unit that performs processing, which can be described as MCU, CPU, etc.

Integrated circuits are much broader in scope, and the integration of some resistors, capacitors, and diodes together is considered an integrated circuit, which may be an analog signal conversion chip, or a logic control chip, but in general, the concept is more toward the bottom of things.

The integrated circuit is a circuit composed of active devices, passive components, and their interconnections made together on a semiconductor substrate or insulating substrate, forming structurally tightly linked, internally related instances of electronic circuits. It can be divided into three main branches: semiconductor integrated circuits, membrane integrated circuits, and hybrid integrated circuits.

Chip is a generic term for semiconductor component products, is the carrier of an integrated circuit (IC, integrated circuit), divided by the wafer.

What is the relationship and difference between semiconductor integrated circuits and semiconductor chips?

Chip is short for the integrated circuit, in fact, the real meaning of the word chip refers to the integrated circuit package inside a little bit of a large semiconductor chip, that is, the tube core. Strictly speaking, chips and integrated circuits are not interchangeable. Integrated circuits are manufactured through semiconductor technology, thin-film technology, and thick-film technology, where a certain function of the circuit miniaturized in the form of a certain package of circuits, can be called integrated circuits. A semiconductor is a substance between a good conductor and a non-good conductor (or insulator).

Semiconductor integrated circuits include semiconductor chips and peripheral related circuits.

?Semiconductor integrated circuit?

Semiconductor integrated circuits are active components such as transistors, diodes, etc., and passive components such as resistors and capacitors, which are "integrated" on a single semiconductor chip according to a certain circuit interconnection to complete a specific circuit or system function.

Semiconductor Chip

A semiconductor device is made by dipping and wiring a semiconductor chip to perform a certain function. Not only silicon chips, but common also include gallium arsenide, germanium, and other semiconductor materials.

Semiconductors also have trends like cars. In the 1970s, Intel and other U.S. companies in the dynamic random access memory (D-RAM) market prevailed. However, due to the emergence of large computers, the need for high-performance D-RAM in the 1980s, Japanese companies came out on top.
