Common Causes of Siding Problems and How to Avoid Them

Your home siding and exterior never take a break, they are always on their job of protecting your home from harsh weather and other outside dangers. Although renovating the siding is not the most exciting renovation of your home. However, they are utterly important and non-negligible. ???????

After facing the extreme sun, harsh winds, heavy rains, and strong storms, sidings are the most vulnerable part of your home to experience damage. Siding can experience damage irrespective of their lifespan depending on what they have been through.

The article explains that you should be careful as they can shrink the lifespan of your siding significantly.

Pests

Siding made out of wood is especially vulnerable to pest attack. They range from woodpeckers searching for healthy meals to the bugs and carpenter bees looking for refuge and sustenance. Termites are known for tunneling the way through the wood, as will powder post beetles, extremely damaging the strength of your siding. This will negatively impact the protection provided by your siding. However, it is not the wood siding that can fall victim to pest attack-other siding products with underlying wood structures are also vulnerable.

You can protect your sidings from pest attacks by using insecticides or hot water running through a spray nozzle. You can also use eco-friendly products and spray them on the surrounding trees, the source of many pests. These products eradicate the pests without damaging the trees.

Moisture

Sidings are specially designed to protect your home from moisture. When damaged moisture becomes a serious issue- sometimes in ways you can’t even see. The clogged and choked moist air inside your home can be a sign of damaged sidings. It is better to get them repaired or replaced before the rainy season. The telltale signs of moisture affecting and destroying your sidings are warping and buckling.

Bad Maintenance Habits

Most siding materials are marketed as low maintenance, but that does not mean they can be left on their own and neglected. Sidings for sure need time-to-time inspections, especially after a severe and extreme weather event. The small problems keep on accumulating and eventually you fall into a situation where emergency repairs, even worse, replacements are needed. By carrying regular maintenance inspections with your siding repair and maintenance contractor you can catch small problematic stuff before it turns into a disaster.

It is advised to carry the siding inspection once a year and after a severe weather event, especially those involving strong winds. You can also inspect sidings on your own periodically. Look for cracks, exposed nails, and other abnormal visible changes. If you find your problems, call your siding contractor immediately.

Bad Installations

Not all siding contractors are made equally. Some so-called professionals out there are just aiming to make some quick money, performing a neglected job. Some do not even have the capability necessary to install the siding correctly: these can significantly reduce the lifespan of the siding.

Therefore, it is advisable to do proper research before trusting a contractor to perform the installation or even repairs of your sidings. Ask your friends and neighbors about their trustable contractors. Use online platforms and review the experience of their previous customers. Shortlist the prospects and choose the one that can provide the evidence of their work using plenty of references.

Roof Issues

While it might seem like a completely irrelevant topic, the quality of your roof actually matters and impacts the stability of your siding. The wearing-out shingles of the roof begin to fall; it allows the moisture to get in the roof and under its layers. The moisture from under sheets of the roof can pave its way to the sidings as well.

This moisture causes damage to the understructures making them weak. Under such conditions, your sidings might look perfectly fine from the outside, but a lot of wearing activity is going on underneath causing major and permanent problems. The internally weak sidings may end up falling without any warning signs. Hence, the inspections and maintenance of both roof and sidings are important.
