How To Lower Employee Turnover

If you recently become a business owner and you started to have people work for you, one of the things you need to avoid is employee turnover. Although this is normal and all businesses with workers experiences, there are things you could do to lower the rate of your business’ employee turnover.

Before you do the following tips and tricks, you need to remember first that employees come and go. Even those who are in their companies for a long time and are happy and settled, the time would still come when they would leave. What you could do as a business owner is to make sure that every transition is easy and it does not cause you some costly oversights.

Hire the right key people

In every organization, there would be key people in important positions. Hiring the right people would ensure that the turnover rate especially in these integral roles would be low. When you started looking for people to hire in these positions, you need to stream the applicants carefully and you need to consider if their behaviour and culture fits the job.

Look past their resumes and credentials. Sure, their educational attainment and experience is important but how they work well with you and others is what’s important, especially if they have people reporting to them. If their well being in the workplace is not taken care of, they would leave or be the reason why people working under them won’t stay around long.

Pay them well with incentives

Some establishments don’t consider their employees as assets or resources. They have this notion that they could just easily replace any individual or staff who wanted to leave. This is wrong because the employees no matter how long or how limited time they have spent on the company is still experienced and well informed on how to do their job than their replacement, even if they are trained well. If the employees are paid with the appropriate salary and with incentives for tasks they have done correctly and efficiently, they are less likely to leave.

Show your appreciation

As a boss, you should be able to show your appreciation to your employees for them to feel motivated. Show them that you see and appreciate all their hard work and do it sincerely. They would be insulted and would not appreciate it if you are only showing your appreciation as lip service.

Of course, you don’t need to appreciate them for every little thing they do but if they do something worth congratulating, do it. What your after is to have a positive and encouraging work environment. When your employees feel respected, acknowledged and important, they are more likely to stay. And it would not cost you anything. Just your sincere words.

When you become the boss of your own organization, it would be up to you to set the working environment and culture in your company. Of course, you could not completely eliminate employee turnover but at least you could lower it.
