Another caveat is that all types of lead-acid batteries need regular maintenance, use, and ventilation to perform correctly. You should prepare yourself to use the batteries regularly as they can release harmful gases when overcharged and not maintained regularly. 

Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries have become a popular option to store solar power and continuously improve and become more affordable. These batteries are smaller, sleeker, and safer options for solar energy backup but are still on the expensive side of the price scale. 

Lithium-ion batteries have significantly longer battery life and offer better DoD (about 80%-90%) as compared to lead-acid batteries. 

Although there are some security concerns related to fire, lithium batteries do not produce toxic gases like lead batteries. Moreover, their lightweight and smaller size make installations easier. 

Saltwater Batteries 

Sodium batteries that use salt to produce power are commonly known as saltwater batteries. They are the safest battery options with no toxic gas production and no threat of catching fire. Saltwater batteries can be drained without damaging the batteries (no DoD constraints). 

Saltwater batteries are cheaper than lithium batteries but expensive than lead batteries. These are best for people with safety concerns.
