Full form of SDM


SDM stands for Sub-Divisional Magistrate. The another name for the Sub-Divisional Magistrate is Chief Civil Officer. Sub Divisional Magistrate is also Chief Civil Officer of a district subdivision.

 When a state is divided it is called a district. And, the district is further subdivided into Sub-district.SDM is responsible for the welfare of the district similarly SDM is responsible for the role and responsibility in that particular subdivision. SDM officer has a charge over Government employees and Tahsildar. He can suggest and recommend with the government on matters of crucial importance.


How to become SDM


To become an SDM you must first crack the UPSC-CSE exam. UPSC is entitled to undertake the Civil Service Exam(CSE).


Eligibility criteria


To become an SDM to need to possess some eligibility criteria. Then, only your eligibile to appear for UPSC-CSE exam. The eligibility criteria to become an SDM are as follows-


Nationality

Person to become SDM should belong to India.


Age limit

  • The minimum age limit for a person to become SDM is 21 years of age and the maximum limit exceeds up to 32 years.
  • The maximum age limit for SC/ST candidates is 37 years.
  • And the limit for or OBC candidates is 35 years, respectively.
  • Handicapped and blind candidates have an examination for up to 10 years.


Educational Qualification


Person to become SDM should at least have done graduation from an authorized university in India. Basic graduation is a criteria to become SDM. Students who are appearing for the final year examination of graduation can also apply for the UPSC-CSE exam.


Number of attempts


The total number of attempts every candidate is allowed for the examination of SDM is 6 attempts.


Exam Pattern


To become SDM you need to apply and crack the Civil Service Examination(CSE) which is undertaken by the Union Public Service Examination(UPSC). Now, let us understand what UPSC is?- UPSC is an examination that is conducted on a national level. It is one of the competitive exams that are undertaken in India. UPSC is taken into three stages named as below-


  • Preliminary exam
  • Mains exam
  • Interview method


  1. Preliminary Exam


The preliminary exam is the first stage of the UPSC exam. This type of exam is of objective type. Two papers consisting of 200 marks or a total of which makes 400 marks? Preliminary exam through objective has negative marking for each wrong answer. Paper 1 includes various subjects like-history, science, politics, geography, and economic development. General knowledge and current affairs play a very vital role in the preliminary exam. 


To improve your current events you can read the newspapers. Try reading newspapers on regular basis. Paper 2 consists of various subjects like communication skills, English skills, comprehension, interpersonal skills, decision-making skills, language skills, mental ability and problem-solving skills.


  1. Mains exam


Once you have passed the preliminary exam you are eligible to appear for the mains exam. The mains exam like the preliminary exam is not objective type but subjective. Mains exam consists of a total of 9 papers and marks for 9 papers are 1750 marks. The syllabus for the mains exam is history, geography, constitution, politics, disaster management, aptitude, English language, and any other Indian language of your choice.


  1. Interview method 


Last but not the least is the interview method. The interview method is of total 275 marks. This is a personal test where the candidate is judged on his skills and capability to take the responsibility to become SDM. Interview subject knowledge current affairs mental ability personal skills everything is tested.


When you qualify for all three rounds of the UPSC exam you become an IAS officer. After that, you are given training. The first position that you get after becoming an IAS officer and training is that of SDM.


Responsibility of SDM


  • Delivers the time of Lok Sabha elections
  • An SDM is involved in and crucial roles in planning implementing execution of rural development
  • SDM is responsible to inspect the revenue matters
  • SDM can ask and look forward to any of the matters in the police station. He can also maintain the relations and co-operate with the police station of that particular sub-division.
  • Is also responsible for the comment of various suggestions or policies to the district magistrate of that particular district.
  • Even maintaining the law and order of that particular sub-division is a core responsibility of SDM.


Salary of SDM


The basic pay of an SDM with some experience is 56100/-.
