Parents Should Know These Principles of Montessori Schools

With over 20,000 Montessori schools all over the world, parents are very much familiar with the word Montessori but still are unaware of its principle, detailed information, curriculum and what all activities are carried out in Montessori Schools and why it is necessary for their child.

So let’s decode it!

What is Montessori?

The Montessori system was developed by Maria Montessori (the first female Italian doctor) in the 20th century. She used her knowledge, experience (as a scientist and doctor), research and observation of children to curate and design a method of education that will be appealing to them.

She designed a new method of education that was completely opposite to the traditional method. She redesigned the classroom and materials based on what she observed about the children where they are active, happy and engaged.

What are the Principles of Montessori Schools?

Experiential learning

In Montessori schools, children learn through doing things practically. There are specially designed materials, activities which keeps them engaged.

They learn to count using concrete materials, they learn alphabets by using movable alphabet materials. Maria Montessori observed that children will learn more through their own experiences and by doing things personally rather than teachers explaining them. Therefore u will find that in KL International School there is no fixed place for children, they can move, play and use materials of their choice. Many activities are conducted not in classrooms but, on campus, playgrounds, toy rooms, sports fields etc. So that they feel refreshed and get change environment and not feel bored.

Mixed-age children

Montessori classrooms include children from different age groups so that the younger students learn by observing their older children. The older children on the other hand learn to gain more knowledge and develop leadership skills by helping younger children.

Academics

In Montessori Schools children have math, language, and science, along with practical life skills and sensorial subjects. Montessori school work on developing children’s language. You will find alphabets, letters, phonics sounds, reading materials etc which will develop early literacy skills.

They are taught Practical life skills such as eating without anyone’s help, tying their shoes, keeping things in their place etc.

In Sensorial sessions, they are given various activities to engage various senses and have positive learning. They are asked to taste food, they are given flowers to smell and are asked how do they feel, they are given pictures to see and questions are asked based on it, audio, poems are played so that they learn through listening and given colours to play or are given object to touch and feel.

Guide

A Montessori teacher plays the role of guiding children and is not like a traditional teacher who just provides instructions.

They observe each child, interact with them on a one-on-one basis and introduce them to the academic materials at the right time. KL International School teachers believe children learn when they are guided on a one-on-one basis as every child is unique and has different learning abilities. So children are guided and not given lectures or group lessons on knowledge and facts.

Overall development

Montessori focuses on the overall development of the children such as academics, physical, social, mental and emotional development. There are various activities conducted on a regular basis that focus on all areas of children.

They are given colour pencils to write and draw to strengthen their motor skills. They are taken to playgrounds so that they can climb, jump and grow physically. They interact with other children, share foods, make friendships which builds social and emotional skills. They do various mindful activities like meditating or age-appropriate children yoga which help their mental health.
