What Factors Differentiate the Cambridge Igcse and O Levels in Malaysia?

The IGCSE and O levels are equivalent qualifications for children between the age of 14 to 16 years of age. While the two curricula are quite similar, there are also key differences between them to set them apart.

IGCSE is more recognized throughout the world, and it was created to encourage better teaching practices and support the modern curriculum. Whereas O levels are an older version of a British secondary education. There are several other differences between the two, some of which are listed here:

1. Grading system in Cambridge IGCSE and O level

The IGCSE curriculum uses a grading system that grades students based on a wide variety of abilities. The O Levels use a grading system where A* is the highest grade and E is the lowest. Cambridge IGCSE uses a grading system where A* is the highest and G is the lowest.

The wider grading system helps teachers be more specific with students about their abilities and helps them improve in those areas much more easily.

2. Subjects offered

The biggest difference between Cambridge IGCSE and O level is the number of subjects offered in each. IGCSE offers over 70 subjects, including Malay as the first language in Malaysia.

On the other hand, O levels do not offer a wide range of subjects. You can choose from around 40 subjects to study in the best schools in Malaysia. However, the syllabus in the O levels may change to meet specific needs such as a local language.

3. Which is preferred by the best schools in Malaysia

IGCSE is a widely accepted qualification for further studies and junior college, whereas every higher educational institution may not accept O levels everywhere.

Most international schools in Malaysia offer an IGCSE curriculum to their students to ensure that they are ready to take on challenges during their further study.

4. Practical work and tests

The IGCSE curriculum uses various assessment methods, including practical work. Therefore, in the IGCSE curriculum, there are a lot more practical classes and tests throughout the term for science subjects.

On the other hand, O levels focus on the basic lab work and do not emphasize lab tests for the final assessments.

5. Assessments

O levels primarily focus on reading and writing skills, so the assessments are mostly limited to written exams and assessments. The IGCSE curriculum uses a variety of assessments such as problem-solving skills, practical skills, knowledge, and understanding, oral skills, etc.

In general, the IGCSE curriculum has a wider range of assessments that help students develop practical skills for future academics and careers in the best schools in Malaysia.

In conclusion

Although both O levels and Cambridge IGCSE are equivalent, the curriculum and teaching style is much different. There are a lot more options and scope in the IGCSE curriculum, so it is usually the better choice for students who aspire to excel in A levels or equivalent degrees. ???????
