These beautiful clothing accessories are beautiful in design, color, embroideries, and textures. Moreover, it’s also worth noting that cashmere wool is 100% animal fabric and is acquired from goats found in the Ladakh region.

One of the beautiful aspects of a cashmere shawl is the embroideries. The artisans hand-embroiders the whole shawl or scarves, making it look exceptional. So, in this blog, we shall look at different types of hand embroideries that we usually find in a Kashmiri shawl.

Here Are The Types Of Hand Embroideries Found In Cashmere Shawls

There are a lot of hand embroideries done on cashmere shawls based on the base fabric. For instance, fine shawls like pashmina are delicate, so we generally see lighter versions of embroideries on them.

On the other hand, thicker embroideries are done on sturdier bases. In places like Angelajey, you will find all sorts of embroideries. So, now let’s look at the embroidery types that are done on a Kashmiri shawl.

1. Sozni

The first on the list, we have sozni embroidery. Earlier, we mentioned that pashmina is handwoven, and that’s why it’s fine and delicate. However, it’s prone to wear and tear if dealt with harshly. So, that’s why pashmina is best suited for Sozni embroidery, which is light.

According to the sources, the sozni embroidery designs have emerged from the Persian-inspired paisley that Mughals introduced. Apart from that, we also have floral patterns used in this form of embroidery.

Furthermore, the Sozni embroidery technique uses cotton threads and sometimes even silk as well. Finally, the artisans use fine needles to embroider motifs onto the base of gossamer. So, it’s one of the most sought-after embroideries.

2.    Tilla

Next, we have Tilla embroidery, which is a bit expensive. However, it’s very popular in the valley. It is said that a bride in the valley should have at least one phiran embroidered with this form of embroidery.

The name Tilla is originated from the village Zari in Iran. However, Syed Ali Hamdani, a saint, traveled to the land of Kashmir and introduced Tilla to the local community. Since then, the locals have been fascinated by the wonderful aesthetics of this embroidery. Royal kings and queens used this during ancient times.

3.    Aari

If you are looking for a cashmere shawl for men with amazing embroidery, then Aari embroidery may become an option. It’s also known as Kashida Kari, and it’s done on Raffal Shawls or sheep wool shawls. The threads that are used to make this embroidery are thick woolen threads.

The artisans require Aari or a specialized crooked head hook to make this embroidery. The hook pulls numerous loops of the threads to make wonderful designs.

4.    Kalamkari

Kalamkari embroidery is another beautiful form of embroidery. Kalamkari comes from two words, Kalam or pen, and Kari or work. In other words, it’s Pen work. The artisans use pens made of bamboo to make designs. Only natural colors are used to dye. Moreover, it takes more than 20 steps to complete a design.

Final Thoughts:

There are several forms of embroideries available on pashmina shawls. So, if you will purchase a cashmere shawl, then do ask about the embroidery details. It’s quite fascinating how much work is being put into making such beautiful designs.
