In 2009, UnionPay achieved acceptance of UnionPay cards at local ATMs through cooperation with the UK ATM transit network, LINK. Recently, in accordance with UK regulatory requirements, the activities of the network institution (LINK Scheme) and the transaction processor (VocaLink) are separated: VocaLink is not eligible to receive orders, UnionPay must sign contracts with all partners, i.e. one-to-one DAB operators. We are in the process of signing contracts with most ATM operators and are accelerating signing with other operators to have UK ATMs fully accepting UniPay cards as soon as possible. During this period, from 30 March 2016, 3:00 a.m. (8:00 p.m. on 29 March, UK time), the Use of UnionPay cards by a small number of UK ATMs may be temporarily affected. It is recommended to try to withdraw cash from the nearby ATM or pay directly with the UnionPay card. While local ATM operators continue to gain access, the ATMs concerned are gradually returning to their normal state.

In accordance with the requirements of the Macau Monetary Authority, the policy "Know Your Customer" (Know Your Customer or KYC) will be implemented for transactions carried out by ATMs in Macau when using the card issued in China. This policy applies to cards issued by all bank card issuers in China. This policy will initiate the test operation in some ATMs. Once the cardholder has inserted the card, the ATM will automatically determine if a know-your-customer test is required and provide instructions. If you use a UnionPay card issued in China to withdraw money in Macau, some ATMs will ask the card reader to verify your second-generation ID card and the ATM's camera will take the photo and compare it to your card identity.

Under the UnionPay Merchant Management Law, it is strictly prohibited to use the UnionPay card issued in China to purchase the overseas property.

Residents of China can use the UnionPay card to pay for health insurance purchases while traveling abroad; It is strictly prohibited to use UnionPay cards to pay for other insurance products. Additionally, if you purchase an insurance product linked to a bank card in China, a one-time restriction of $5,000 or other equivalent currency will be applied.

In accordance with UnionPay Corporate Rules, it is strictly prohibited to use UnionPay Cards to directly or indirectly pay for game products.

If you confirm that your cash withdrawal does not exceed the daily or annual overseas limit, but your ATM withdrawal request is rejected, this may be due to different cross-border cash withdrawal limits set by some banks. It is recommended to go to another bank's ATM terminal again.

Tips for using a credit or debit card

You can use the credit card abroad to redeem and enjoy a certain interest-free period, but consumption is limited by the credit limit. Consumption of debit cards is only limited by account balance (except when the individual sets the consumption limit), which is suitable for high-value consumption. In addition to paying operating fees, withdrawals made abroad by credit card require the payment of interest on cash advances. Therefore, it is recommended to use your debit card for overseas withdrawals, as debit card withdrawals only require transaction fees.

Signature and password

Regardless of debit or credit card, sign the back of the card. For purchase by credit card, sign the order form to facilitate verification with the cashier. Regardless of credit or debit card, enter your password when you swipe the card. For cards that do not have a password, press ENTER or enter 6 digits. Do not set too simple a card password: when entering the password, it is recommended to cover the keyboard by hand to prevent remote recording.

If you use the UnionPay credit card with the transaction password set up to make the overseas purchase, you can confirm the transaction by “signature + password”; for cards without the transaction password, confirm only by signature.

After the accident, within three days from the day of the accident (extended in case of vacation), please bring the valid certificate (such as a passport) to Operation Point to request a return of the bank card. If you do not request the return of the card within three days, the card will be destroyed.

Error Solution

If the account is debited at the time of withdrawal, but the ATM does not dispense money or if the payment is incorrect at the time of consumption, ask the card-issuing bank to correct the error after you return to China.
