5 Most Common Plastic Surgery Procedures

Plastic surgery is big business. With increasingly more people going under the knife to improve their physical features, these procedures are growing in popularity and becoming normalized. Below is a list of the five most common plastic surgery procedures in the US in 2020.

Rhinoplasty

According to data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 352,555 people had rhinoplasty, making it the most common plastic surgery procedure in 2020. Otherwise known as a “nose job”, rhinoplasty involves reshaping the nose to bring it in balance with the rest of the face. Often performed for aesthetic reasons, surgeons will typically reduce the overall size of the nose to give it a more pleasing appearance.

In other cases, rhinoplasty is done for functional reasons such as injury or deformity, as well as improving a person’s breathing. If you’re curious about this procedure, you may want to check out rhinoplasty in Las Vegas to find out if it’s suitable for you.

Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery was the second most popular procedure in 2020, with over 325,000 operations performed. Also known as blepharoplasty, this procedure is conducted on the upper or lower eyelids — or sometimes both — to improve the overall appearance. Aside from cosmetics, eyelid surgery is often performed to assist with functional problems around the eyelids. This includes:

  • Loose or saggy skin around the eyes. This can create folds and impair vision.
  • Fatty deposits. This can lead to puffiness in the eyelids.
  • Bags under the eyes.
  • Drooping lower eyelids that reveal the white below the iris.
  • Excess skin and/or wrinkles.

Facelift

Over 200,000 people had a facelift in the US in 2020, making it the third most common procedure. Known medically as a rhytidectomy, facelifts are a surgical method for tightening the skin around the face to give it a more youthful appearance. This involves smoothing out wrinkles, reducing skin sag, and pulling the facial skin tighter. In many cases, facelifts are combined with other procedures such as fillers, eyebrow lifts, skin peels, or forehead lifts to reduce the visible signs of aging.

Liposuction

Liposuction is another common procedure in the US, with some 211,067 people electing for this surgery in 2020. Known colloquially as “lipo”, this type of procedure removes excess fat deposits to improve a person’s body shape and proportion. The areas where liposuction is performed include:

  • Abdomen
  • Ankles
  • Arms
  • Buttocks
  • Cheeks
  • Chin
  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Neck
  • Thighs
  • Upper arms
  • Waist

Liposuction can be performed alongside other cosmetic surgery procedures such as facelifts, breast reductions, or tummy tucks. However, liposuction is not intended as a remedy for obesity or cellulite issues.

Breast Augmentation

Last year, 193,073 people underwent breast augmentation in the US. Previously, this figure was closer to 300,000, but it is still a very popular procedure while these numbers have been declining. Breast augmentation can involve different types of procedures ranging from implants, enlargement, reduction, replacing an absent breast, or making breasts equal in size. This procedure is also performed when breasts do not develop properly during puberty due to a condition known as congenital micromastia.
