A 3-Step Plan to Deal with Burnout as a Physical Therapist

How to Deal with Burnout as a Physical Therapist

Everybody goes through Burnout physical therapists at one time or another. The ongoing pressures of work leave you exhausted,  helpless and unmotivated. Turns out all those washed-out and washed-up feelings that have an official medical diagnosis, according to the International Classification of Diseases, or according to the ICD-11, the World Health Organisation’s handbook is available for helping medical providers diagnose diseases. As the CNN reports, burnout is now in the ICD-11’s section on problems regarding employment or the lack thereof. The handbook characterises burnout by three dimensions:

  1. Reduced professional efficacy
  2. Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion
  3. Increased mental distance from one’s job, or the feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job.

3 Step Plan to Overcome Physical Therapy Burnout

It has been seen in all the videos of what is wrong in healthcare and why it's causing burnout. Agreed, but I think we are far from an entire overhaul of the healthcare system to fix the problem of burnout. The only way to fix our situation is by changing it ourselves with the support of others.

Step One: Find Your Ideal

It has been said that people are happiest when they learn and they grow. Have you been working so hard towards a new set of skills or knowledge? If you have done so, have you ever set an intention regarding it? If you have not set an intention, this could be a big source of burnout.

Now, have a look at the person who has your ideal career. What do you need to study to set yourself up for the opportunities you are looking for?

First, you have to make a list of what you need to get you where you want to go. Do you need better manual skills, teaching experience, a higher level evaluation approach, or public speaking ability?  Once you get to know what you need, you may start finding the courses, the books, or opportunities that you will need to get yourself there. This will be your personalised growth plan and this will act as your road map. You should Look at where you are and where you ultimately want to be. Then, list all the skills you will need, the people whom you may need to be involved with, or the information which you might need to learn.

Step Two: Don’t Just Plan, Go Do It

The main thing about burnout is that you will get stuck in this never-ending cycle. You are burnt out so you feel exhausted, and then when you feel exhausted, you do not have the energy to change anything about being burnt out.  When this goes on for long enough, it is the nature of humans to feel like they need some grandiose plan. Then, people start planning and planning and planning and at last, get tired or lose momentum by the time it comes to act.  You have to treat beating Burnout physical therapists like a row of dominos. You have to do one thing and let a chain reaction occur where you continue to progress. You may choose ONE action and do it NOW or you may choose a SECOND action and SCHEDULE when you will or won't do it.

Step Three: Find Your Team

You cannot address burnout all alone. When it comes to the changing of your environment, the power of having good people around you is unparalleled. You will be needing people to challenge you,to support you and hold you accountable and this can be the difference between being stuck and propelling forward.

A group of people to support you and guide you should never be underestimated. You can

look for others in positions or in areas where you wish to grow into and start to “seek what they sought.” You may take courses, read the articles and join various discussions. Or you may find a group to hold you accountable. This will be the best when it is made up of individuals which also aims to level up and progress. Or you may also establish a mentor who can help to guide you through the process. No one ever said that it was easy and no one has all the answers. The best thing we can do is to find someone who can help and provide perspective along the way.

Burnout is the beginning! It is not the end!

The outcome of Burnout physical therapists is what will ultimately define you. It can be the first step in converting from average to amazing. Burnout is not the greatest setback, it is the secret weapon to your next success! Now, go get something amazing done!???????
