Track Search Box Keywords with Google Analyics!

Have you ever wondered what a person might be looking for when they visit your site? If you have a search box on your weblog, it makes sense to track what folks type into it… you can learn a lot about your audience.

Even if your site is user-friendly with navigation that a 5-year-old can follow, many people will cut to the chase and type a few topic keywords in your search box to bring up posts for the subject they are searching for.

Do you use Google Analytics to monitor your site? If you don’t, follow the link and sign up for a google analytics account to start learning more about your readers.

Are you aware that you can track the search terms that a person types into your search box using Google Analytics? Well, you can, and here’s how to set it up.

To set up a site search in Google Analytics, follow these steps:

1. – Log into Google Analytics.

2. – Click Edit next to the web site for which you want to track your site’s search box terms.

3. – Click Edit at the top right side of the box, ‘Main Website Profile Information’.

4. – Select the ‘Do Track Site Search’ radio button (see image below).

5. – Leave the Google Analytics page open in your browser, then open a separate browser window or tab for the next few steps.

6. – In the new browser or tab window, go to your web site.

7. – Search for the example, “Green Widgets” using your weblog’s search box. Look at the address of the search results page. (you should find the words Green Widgets in the address, as well as a query attribute, in this case the letter s).

Search query attributes can be words such as “term”, “search” or “query”. Many times the search query word is simply a letter, such as “s” or “q” as my weblog shows.

8. – Enter the query attribute in the Query Parameter field in Google Analytics (see the first image, bottom arrow).

9. – Click Save Changes.

You’re done… within a few hours, you’ll start seeing the phrases people search for on your site. To locate this in your Google Analytics, navigate to your Dashboard > Content > Site Search.
