Types of Internal Packaging Materials

Packaging materials like corrugated cardboard boxes, wrapping papers, or padded jiffy envelopes offer excellent protection during transportation.

But that isn’t enough to absorb shock and protect items inside the boxes from vibrating or shifting.

For fragile products like electronics, glassware, jewellery, etc., you need internal protective packaging materials.

Here are some of the most frequently used internal product packing supplies.

Bubble Cushioning

Biodegradable bubble cushioning offers fantastic protection for shipping or storing items. Invented in the 1906s, bubble cushioning helps to minimise the additional weight of packaging supplies reducing the cost of shipment.

There are different types of bubble cushioning, like small bubble wrap or large bubble wrap. The air is evenly distributed in each bubble, securing fragile products from road shock or impacts.

Loose Fillers

When shipping smaller items, there are a lot of free spaces inside the box. This can be dangerous, and that’s why you need void fillers.

There are different kinds of loose fillers like anti-static foam peanuts, which are mainly used for electronic items. These materials are devoid of Expanded Polystyrene Peanuts that cause static electricity, which can damage electronic products.

However, loose fillers cannot be used for a number of products. For instance, flat, narrow framed products often migrate inside the package.

Loose fillers often may shift during transportation, thus exposing the product further for damage. According to guidelines, it is necessary to use a minimum of 2 inches of void fillers covering from all sides of the container.

Cardboard Inserts

Void fillers can be expensive; that’s why many companies use cardboard inserts as a secondary layer of protection. These types of internal packaging materials are often used for glassware like dinner sets, glass sets, etc.

Corrugated separates form a pad between the products and also between product and container. The best part is that these inserts can be easily shaped into trays, liners, partitions that work for different types of fragile or heavy products.

Kraft Paper

Broadly used by moving companies, packing papers add a stabilising element to an item. Often this packaging material is used to pack kitchen appliances.

Besides stuffing or wrapping products, this can also be stuffed between items. Kraft papers are great for shock absorption as it is slightly thicker than average newspaper.

Inflatable Packaging

This particular type of packaging uses air pressure to secure the products inside the shipping container. A number of luxury products arrive in this type of packaging.

However, air barriers as cushioning can get affected for several reasons. Cold weather or the volume of air causes extra space inside the carton, risking product damage.

Foam Sheets

Foam sheet packaging is used even in the textile industry. Foam sheets provide a unique type of protection. It is soft yet tough enough to help with shock absorption.

This packing material is also used to line boxes, shipping containers, or crates.

Internal Cushioning Methods

Some of the well-known ways of product cushioning are:

Blocking

This method is preferred for heavy weighing items where you can block shipments by absorbing the shock.

Floatation

In this method, small pieces of cushioning surround an object to fill the empty spaces. This distributes the impact throughout the entire package.

Suspension

For highly fragile products, the suspension is used. This is a method where the product is placed away from the sides of the container to keep it protected. Tapes, straps, poly-film are used as flexible restraints.

Wrapping

This is very common. Individual pieces are wrapped to protect small items. However, this doesn’t work with more oversized products.

As protective packaging is taking centre stage, internal packaging materials like foam sheets, large roll of bubble wrap, peanut fillers are also rising in demand. Not but all packaging distributors have everything.
