The Importance of Having a Well Knitted Team in an Advertising Agency

A Brief Overview

Working in an advertising agency requires every individual to be efficient in what they do. An effective team is one that knows when and what to deliver. Things should be clear otherwise the whole team suffers the consequences.

Now, the important thing to note here is to identify the deadline and schedule tasks according to that deadline.

Importance of Defining a Clear Goal/Objective

For any team to function properly and in an organized manner, all the team members must be clear about the goal and objective of a certain task and must also be aware of the deadline. If the deadline is not communicated properly, it can cause a lag in the work that is required from them.

So, make sure that your team is communicated properly about the tasks and the deadlines of the assigned job.

Dividing the Tasks Equally

Once the tasks are clearly defined, make sure that you divide those fairly and equally amongst the team members. Everyone must have clear responsibilities and also have ample time to complete the said tasks within a stipulated time.

Communication is Key

Different people from different backgrounds but similar goals and expertise come together on a single platform to form a team. And as in every team, efforts from all the team members are required if you wish to succeed as a whole and even if one member is lacking in completing his/her responsibilities, the whole team gets affected. And this should be avoided at all costs.

Team members also need support from each other every now and then and they would not be comfortable asking for it if they are not properly gelled in. So, for a team to function well, communication is really important, it also helps in building a relationship of trust amongst them which benefits everyone in the end.

Building Trust amongst the Team Members

Providing advertising and marketing services in a busy and ever-changing, ever-developing market is not an easy task especially when there is something new every single day. And to get the best out of your marketing team, you need to have a relationship of trust with them. If you are willing to put your trust in them, they will definitely perform better and do their best.

If you give them uncalled for tough-time they might get demotivated. That is not a good thing to have in a team. Demotivated individuals in advertising agencies cannot perform well and they definitely cannot meet deadlines in due time.

Avoid Excessive Criticism

So, always be mindful of how you treat your team members. Do not be unnecessarily harsh, do not yell at them, if you want to correct them or criticize them, do that in private and not in front of other team members because that would be embarrassing for them. They might also have problems with someone else in the team which they would not be able to tell you if you ask them publicly.

So, try to build a relationship with them through effective communication. They should feel like they can come to you with anything and you should try to resolve it as fast as you can.

Importance of Team Building Exercises

A motivated team goes a long way and achieves everything within the given time frame, benefitting the advertising agency as a whole. And in order to motivate your team, you need to have team-building exercises, a proper reward system, regular bonuses for excellent work, any fun activities that you think would knit the team together further and make them comfortable with you and the other team members.

Intermingle Outside of Work too

You could also arrange office lunches, dinners, short trips at the end of a hectic week so that everyone can unwind together. In my opinion, when the team members feel like they can spend time together outside of work, they perform better in the office because of the trust that they have built together.

Such activities are important and a manager must think about carrying these out because a well-adjusted team would benefit everyone in the end. They would be comfortable with each other, they would enjoy their day-to-day tasks and things would also get done on time, benefitting the company and the clients as well.

Make Diversity your Strength

In a creative agency especially, people from diverse backgrounds come together and work as a team. This allows all of them to look at things from different perspectives and it helps them a lot. But it also requires careful knitting of the team. Once your team is built, there is nothing you need to worry about in terms of workload and deadlines. Because a capable team takes care of everything on their own. But to achieve this you will have to do your end of the work first.

Importance of Communicating Tasks Clearly

Once you are clear on what you expect from the team, you need to communicate it effectively to them. You cannot just expect them to understand. You need to have a clear-cut meeting with them explaining the tasks that are required. And in how much time do they have to finish said tasks.

Ask for their Opinions/Input

It is important to involve them in decision-making related to their work. You could ask for their opinions, respect them and try to incorporate them into your strategies. Whenever there is room to so that they also feel like a part of the process and not just people who perform tasks blindly.

Taking input from your team members can be beneficial for you too. You never know when someone comes up with a brilliant idea. Or a suitable strategy that is best suited for that particular task. So, always keep the communication lines open!

Setting Targets

Setting targets is also a good method to keep your team motivated. But once the target is communicated. let them work at their pace, do not start inquiring about the progress of the task right away. Let them work out a plan for their tasks themselves and follow it. Ask them about the progress later. Closer to the deadline so that they know that you trust them with any given task.

Setting Work Priorities

And now the most important part of assigning tasks; setting work priorities. Now anyone who works at an advertising agency  is aware of the fact that there are always multiple things going on and which is why it is important for the managers to set the priorities first and then let the team know about the given tasks so that they are not overwhelmed and the clients’ work doesn’t suffer.

I also believe that setting priorities gives a little breathing room to the people working on those projects. Because when you are constantly working on a single project for such a long time. Your mind gets stuck and ideas start to fade but when another task comes along. It gives you a little break from the previous one and you can come back to that later with a fresh mind.

Conclusion

So, to sum up I would like to say that communication and trust are what keeps a team afloat in an advertising agency. If you do not have effective communication within your team. You would never be able to complete set tasks within the given timeframe.
