Maybe you have read Fashion magazines like Vogue, Vanity Fair, Cosmopolitan and many other which showcases artistic and novel fashion illustration or photography. "Fashion" is a big word that means popular and current clothing, hair, decoration and accessories. Wearing clothes at beginning was a form of necessity, but it only became popular when powerful people wore appropriate and stylish clothes. Fashion is an unavoidable form of expression, and you have complete control over how and what you do with it. Just like Fashion, its photography trends are also ever-changing.

2021 was the year of COVID vaccines, climate changes, civil disturbances, the rise of cryptocurrency and whatnot. But this year there are some old trends for fashion photography that we should say goodbye or welcome again. Here are a few trends for the year 2022 in fashion photography:-

Fashion Photography Trends for the year 2022

1. Keeping it Minimal

Minimalism means “Less is more”. Capturing minimalistic photography means you need to have the precision to bring out a clearer frame with minimum details that focuses more on the subject. Using fewer things in the frame alongside with model in a plain background is a great way to capture minimal photography.

This is an effective technique if you need to focus more on fashion, as the portrayal of the subject needs to be loud and clear. This is also applicable in the editing process, instead of using heavy filters, the photographers are keeping the image as authentic as possible.

2. Capturing Candid Moments

Candid photography allows to bring out the person’s personality, these images are usually authentic and unfiltered. With candid, the photographer can get real beauty out of the photograph.

3. Use of Bold Colors

Using bold colors in images can bring out the vivid and vibrant tones that make the product look alluring and attractive. With bold and colourful accessories or backgrounds, it can take dullness away and make photos look lively and happy.

4. Vertical Photography

Vertical photography became one of the most popular ways to capture fashion during the time of lockdown. Due to the rise of social media platforms like Instagram, Tik Tok and more the fashion content is grabbing viewers’ attention by doing it in a vertical framing. Tell your model to flaunt the accessories or clothes he/she is wearing and capture them in a vertical frame. Make sure to edit it before putting out the image in front of an audience.

5. Diving into Surrealism

Surrealism is something of an out of the world concept which came into reality. Many fashion photographers use the concept of “surrealism” to portray the image to stand out than others. It allows people to see an alternative reality that has mind-boggling visuals and details through images. You can distort the image giving a surreal effect through the editing process.

6. Make it Retro

You probably know that old-style fashion bounces back after a decade. With the fashion industry following the old trends, fashion photographers need to adapt the retro style of photography. To create retro photography, one must need to start with the makeup of the model and finish it off with a retro hairdo and accessories. Another thing to keep in mind is about poses and location which can enhance fashion photography.

In the post-processing process, you can give a vintage effect and pop retro colors to create trendy retro fashion photography.

7. Social Issues

“Every Picture has a hidden story” isn’t it? It is the most effective means of communicating society's social ills and struggles, as well as encouraging minds to think in innovative ways for the development of society. Due to the climate crisis, the fashion industry is shifting towards sustainability. Big fashion brands are working towards social causes and adding them to their products. Even fashion illustrators, designers and photographers are implementing social causes through their work.

8. Skin Smoothing, body resizing and skin whitening is a big NO!

People love using filters in their photos to make them look beautiful, but those can end up damaging one person’s self-esteem. These are quite popular and going to be here for many years. So, it’s time to ditch them for good.

Skin smoothing and whitening is a technique that was used even before Instagram started millions of filters. Editing techniques for beautifying the models had a lot of negative impacts on people, especially young women. Resizing and even thinning faces and bodies’ trends give impractical expectations on young people minds. Of course, it is okay to do some minor skin blemishes like editing a pimple spot from a bride’s face or adjusting white balance.

One should get used to how natural skin should be. One of the authentic and beautiful self in the irrespective of color, shape, size or race. Nowadays body acceptance and inclusivity are new trends in the fashion industry.

Final Thoughts

Many unpredictable challenges can change the course of the fashion industry and the newest trend can develop anytime. Studio photography makes look fine, but nothing can beat the natural surroundings like parks, beaches, underwater etc. with natural lightning to capture astonishing photographs. Another common trend that emerged due to the pandemic is socially distanced, it may sound a bit strange idea that models are allowed to stand apart but creativity and originality can add depth to the photo.

Fashion Photography trends will come and go, but some will stay and others will be forgotten. If you want any inspiration or idea it is better to go with fashion illustration for capturing photography. Practice is perfection, the more you will practice taking fashion photography; you will get more hands-on experience.

And Remember, Never Go Out of Style!
