In simple words, laptops were made to replace desktop computers, wherein they should look more slim and portable. If we speak about the early laptops, then technically they cannot be called laptops. We can call them portable computers, some of their feature were like fat and clunky boxes which were attached with keyboards and a floppy disk drive. They all could be folded and had a handle on the top which allowed them to carry it. Your hands would surely pain if you carry them for a distance.
It is been said that an engineer in the Xerox organization in the early 1970’s had thought of making portable computers that would be easy to carry from one place to another. Most of these models never saw the light of day. Out of them Xerox PARC was built in limited numbers only and was never commercially used.
The company called ZDS did taste commercial success when they won an order of 200,000 portable computers that were designed for the United States Air Force.
Apple company was had tasted success with Macintosh. Then they started working on new portable computers wherein they released the first Powerbooks which they had made with a lot of effort. But in this case, also they very bulk and not easy to carry. Slowly and gradually company worked on its features to make it more efficient and light. After years of hard work and efforts, they reached the Mac Book line which we use nowadays.
We can proudly say that in the year 1995, with the introduction of Windows 95 faith and looks of notebook computers were going to change. These operating systems used advanced power management features, instead of being dependent on the BIOS. Luckily at the same time, Intel was working on Pentium processors which were more power-friendly than initial chips. Also, the introduction of CD-ROM was a game-changer that helped them to reduce the weight of bulky computers.
For the last few decades, we have seen tremendous improvement in technology both in the hardware and software fields. In the early days, the CPU was a bulky part of computers’, but continuous improvement in the final products such as power-friendly options, chips that were not just smaller but micro-small which in turn helped in making modern-day laptops lighter and thinner due to which the CPU full form and its structure have changed a lot. Also With the introduction of Windows 8, computers have become more touch-friendly than they were in past years. It does not mean that the mouse would be replaced or would be out completely wiped out. It is here to stay but surely their demand in the market would decrease and big companies who manufacture them are getting affected by the decline in the demand of the mouse.
