The visit of Mahashay Dharmapala Gulati took him from Sialkot in 1947 to a refugee camp in Amritsar and then to Delhi where he came to be known as 'Masala King'.

New Delhi: Dharmapala Gulati, the owner of the MDH masala brand, often referred to as a grand old spice, died on Thursday. The 98-year-old elderly Kovid was crushed before he surrendered for cardiovascular failure.


Gulati was undergoing treatment at a hospital in New Delhi where he underwent a cardiac arrest on the morning of 3 December. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in a tweet that "Dharam Pal ji was a very romantic character" who "devoted his life to the general public".


Monsieur was similarly recognized as "Masala Swami" and had projected a specialty with an image of his taste in India as well as around the world. Brought to the world in Sialkot (present-day Pakistan) in 1923, he moved India along with his people during parcels when India gained independence in 1947.

The MDH company also established its roots in Pakistan, where Mahashay's father opened a small spice shop called "Mahasya Di Hatti" in 1919, which later became one of the largest spice manufacturers in India, valued at 15,000 crore. Never met such an inspiring and vibrant soul.

After leaving class five, he joined the spice business of his father, Mahashi Chunni Lal Gulati.
According to his biography on the MDH site, he established a business in 1937 with the help of his father and started selling mirrors, soaps, hardware and rice. At this point when the business boomed, he returned with his father to work for the organization Mahashishya Di Hatti. At that time, they were popularly known as "Digi Chilli Vale" individuals.

He opened his first store in Karol Bagh, Delhi and grew his business from that point on.
MDH, a company he re-founded in 1959, today sells 62 products available in more than 150 different packages. Their spices are also sold worldwide.
 At the age of 94 in 2017, Mr. Gulati became the highest-paid CEO in India in 2017.
In a meeting with The Economic Times in 2017, he stated, "My motivation to work is the highest in the quality of the item sold at a reasonable cost. And about 90 percent of my salary goes to charity in my personal capacity . "
From a small shop in Sialkot, MDH today has workplaces in Dubai and London and fares in about 100 countries. Everyday activities are taken care of by the spread of Monsieur's children and their six girls.
Mahashahi was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the nation's third highest regular civilian honor, by the Narendra Modi government in 2019.
